Twyl

Terms

Version 2026-10-23

These terms are the agreement between you and Mathieu Demarne, who runs Twyl from Seattle, Washington, in the United States ("we").

By signing in, you accept these terms and the corresponding Privacy policy. Twyl records which version you accepted and when.

Who runs Twyl

Twyl is run by Mathieu Demarne during the private preview. Transfer to a company will be done as part of the public preview if the project moves forward. That company will then take our place in these terms, keep your books for you as we do, and take on every promise these terms and the Privacy policy make. You agree that these terms can pass to that company in this way. You will be notified of any term changes going forward. The same holds if Twyl ever passes to anyone else.

Write to us at contact@twyl.ink.

Your book is yours

Everything you write in Twyl, and every note, Twyl and conversation you keep there, belongs to you. You give us only the permission we need to run Twyl for you: to store your books, to show them to you, and to send what a model needs to read to the model you chose, when you ask it to. That permission ends when you delete a book or your account, but for the copies the Privacy policy lists, for as long as it says. If you send us a passage with a feedback thumb, the owner may read it to find and fix what Twyl got wrong; we delete that passage after 90 days. We claim no other right in your work, and we never use it to train a model. You keep every right in your writing, your moral rights among them. We do not publish or sell it, and we disclose it only to the model provider you choose when you interact with the chat or other AI functionalities on Twyl such as Verify and Catalogue, to the service providers and others described in the Privacy policy, or when the law requires.

If you give us an idea about Twyl itself—in a feedback line you write with a thumb, in a message, or in any other way—we may use it freely to improve Twyl, without owing you anything. This applies only to ideas about Twyl, not to your writing.

What you put into Twyl is yours, and so is the responsibility for it. You may put into Twyl only what you have the right to: your own writing, or writing you are allowed to use, and what it says of other people. Twyl stores and reads it because you ask it to; we do not review it as a matter of course, check it or vouch for it, and we are not responsible for it.

Twyl is made for writing. Do not keep in it passwords, payment or bank details, identity documents, other people's medical or financial records, or anything else whose exposure would do serious harm beyond your book, and do not import files that carry malicious code.

Twyl is ours

Twyl itself, its software, its design, its methods, its name and its mark, belongs to us, with every right in it. We let you use Twyl for your own writing while you have an account. That permission is personal, cannot be passed on, and ends with your account. Nothing in these terms gives you any other right in Twyl, and nothing in this section reaches your books.

Much of what you see in the preview is unreleased. Until we make a feature public, or the preview ends, do not publish screenshots, recordings or descriptions of how it works without asking us first. This does not cover what is already public, your own writing, which is yours to show anyone, or what you think of Twyl: you may always say it, good or bad, and show what you need to say it. If you do not keep to this, we may end your access, and nothing more.

What the AI gives you

Twyl's findings, suggestions, chat replies and drafts are written by an AI model. They can be wrong, incomplete, or close to writing that already exists. You decide what to accept, and you are responsible for what you publish. Text you accept into your book is yours, as the rest of it is, as far as the law lets anyone own it: in some countries, text written by a machine has no copyright of its own. Nothing Twyl says is legal, medical or other professional advice.

You are responsible for how your book portrays real people. Twyl does not check your writing, or what it drafts, for defamation, for privacy, or for whether it resembles existing text.

External sources

Twyl lets you look up information through Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap. The option is off by default.

Material from other sources. What Twyl looks up keeps its own license. Wikipedia’s text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, and OpenStreetMap’s data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License. Twyl shows where each answer came from. If you copy such material into your book, its license goes with it, and attributing it is up to you.

Using these sources is your choice. The sources the chat can consult are optional and off by default. Turning one on is your choice, for each book, and you can turn it off at any time. Twyl doesn’t control these services, doesn’t guarantee they’re available or accurate, and may stop offering a source if its terms change.

Distances. Twyl gives distances as the crow flies. Any travel time it mentions is an estimate, not a route.

Using Twyl fairly

Fiction may depict violence, crime, cruelty and sex between adults. What Twyl may not be used for is harm in the real world. Do not use Twyl:

  • for anything illegal, or to infringe someone else's rights, their copyright among them;
  • to write sexual content involving minors, to incite real violence, to harass a real person, or to pass off fraud or disinformation as fact;
  • to reach another writer's books or account;
  • to break, overload, probe or get around how Twyl works, its ink and its limits included, or to scrape it with bots or scripts; tools that help you read or write, like screen readers or dictation, are welcome;
  • to copy Twyl's software or design to build a product that competes with it, or to decompile it, except as far as the law lets you;
  • to share your account, to open more than one account to get more ink, or to sell access to Twyl.

You may not use Twyl if you are in a country, or are a person, under United States sanctions, or sanctions that bind the providers Twyl relies on.

Twyl does not read your books to look for breaches. A model's provider may run automatic filters of its own and may refuse a request; trying to get around such a refusal breaks this section. If we receive a report of a breach, or see one ourselves, we may limit or suspend your account without notice. We tell you why by email, and you can answer.

Anyone who believes Twyl holds illegal content can report it to contact@twyl.ink, saying where it is and why it is illegal; we confirm that we received it, and say what we decided.

Ink

During the preview Twyl is free. Each month brings an allowance of ink, which is what a call to a model spends. Ink has no money value, cannot be bought or sold, and ends with your account. We may change the monthly allowance, and tell you before a cut takes effect. If Twyl ever asks to be paid, it will be under new terms, which you will be asked to accept first, and you will pay nothing unless you choose to.

A preview

Twyl is in a private preview: an experiment, which may not last. It is provided as it is and as it is available, without any promise, stated or implied, that it works, that it suits your purpose, that what it says is right, that it is always there or that it keeps your work safe, as far as the law allows. It may change, have faults, lose work, or stop. We take care to keep your data safe and secure, but Twyl is not a backup: download your books regularly.

We may end the preview, or Twyl, at any time and for any reason, with at least 7 days' notice, during which Export works as usual. We may stop sooner, without notice, for a serious reason: a risk to security or to your data, the law, a provider Twyl relies on stopping, or a cost we cannot carry. Either way, we keep your books for 30 days after Twyl closes, send them to you if you ask, and then delete them.

What we answer for

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss of your work or data, for lost profits or income, for anything a model writes or gets wrong, for what a provider Twyl relies on does or fails to do, or for indirect or consequential damage. Our total liability to you, for everything together, is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before any claim, or 50 US dollars if that is more. During the preview you pay nothing.

If someone else makes a claim against us because you put into Twyl something you knew you had no right to, or broke "Using Twyl fairly" on purpose, you cover our reasonable costs of that claim, as far as the law of your country allows.

If applicable law does not allow the two paragraphs above to apply in full, they apply only to the extent permitted. We remain responsible for harm caused intentionally or through gross negligence, and for death or injury. For slight negligence, any responsibility is limited to harm that is typical and foreseeable for a free service, and applies only where the law does not allow us to exclude it. We remain responsible for the providers we choose to the extent the law requires.

Nothing in these terms limits a liability that applicable law does not let be limited, or takes away a right that applicable consumer law gives you.

Your account

Accounts open when we approve them, and we may decline one. You must be at least 18. Keep your sign-in to yourself, and tell us at once if someone else may have used it; you answer for what is done with your account unless it was not your fault. You can delete your account at any time from the menu under your name; your books and your data go with it, as the Privacy policy says. We may suspend or close an account that does not keep to these terms, as "Using Twyl fairly" says; for a serious breach, or when the law requires it, we may do so at once and without warning. During the preview we may also end an account's access for another reason, such as making the preview smaller, and without notice. If we close your account or Twyl closes, you can ask us for your books for 30 days afterwards, unless the law forbids us to give them back.

Changes

We may change these terms for a good reason: a change in the law, in Twyl, or in how we run it. When we do, the version above changes, and you will be asked to accept the new terms before you carry on. If you do not accept them, you can leave at no cost.

The law

If something goes wrong, please contact us first and give us 30 days to try to put it right. You may go sooner to a court or an authority whenever the law allows you to do so.

Washington law governs these terms, except to the extent mandatory consumer law where you live applies. Any dispute will go to the courts of King County, Washington, except where the law gives you the right to bring it elsewhere or says it may be brought only there. If you use Twyl as a consumer, you keep all protections and rights that mandatory law in the country where you live gives you. Nothing in these terms takes those rights away.

The rest

These terms, together with the Privacy policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Twyl. We write to you by email, at the address you signed in with, or in Twyl, and that counts as written notice.

If we do not enforce a part of these terms immediately, we have not given up our right to enforce it later. "Your book is yours", "What we answer for" and "The law" continue to apply after your account ends. No one else can enforce these terms.

We are not responsible for a delay or failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, but this does not take away any of your rights under the law. If a part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
